Rumors of a possible attack by the U.S. or Israel threw Popular Front commandos into a panic. On Friday afternoon, they suddenly ordered a four-man Red Cross medical team off the airstrip and turned back a Red Cross supply convoy that was on its way to the hostages. Then, while passengers and crew were hustled inside the stifling aircraft, demolition squads wired up explosive charges under the wings of each plane. Popular Front leaders demanded new guarantees from Red Cross negotiators that none of the five nations were contemplating a rescue attack on the airfield. Said Swiss Foreign Minister...

...enough to survive such an embarrassment; Hussein probably is not. The Jordanian king badly needs a diplomatic success to save his throne. Last week he survived yet another assassination attempt, the second against him in the past three months. According to a palace report, he was riding in a convoy of seven Land Rovers on his way to Amman airport to meet Daughter Alia, 14, when the attackers struck from ambush. Hussein was uninjured, but the Jordanian army responded to the attack by shelling guerrilla camps around Amman. Fedayeen leaders complained that Hussein had staged the incident as a pretext...

When the two groups came to the last roadblock of Cambodian soldiers, they presumably flashed their press cards and headed on, unaware that North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops had moved into the area. The convoy had gone only a mile or so when the soldiers at the checkpoint heard an explosion and bursts of small-arms fire. Two days later, when Cambodian troops moved forward, they found the burned-out Jeep and five fresh-graves. The body of Syvertsen was in one of them...

While Moshoeshoe chafed, reports of battles between Lesothian guerrillas and the country's British-led police began echoing down from the hills. Last week, at diamond-rich Kao, rebels reportedly hurled boulders down on a police convoy. In retaliation, the police commandeered light aircraft from Lesotho Airways (a tiny air-taxi operation owned by the government) and, in a throwback to the aerial tactics of 1914, dumped hand grenades on the rebels. Total rebel losses since the fighting began are put at 150; the police admit that two lawmen have been killed and several more wounded...
