...from the moment she walks onstage. She demonstrates great range as Kathleen Hogan, sometimes crumpled in tears on her bed, other times ironing fanatically or gleefully switching the radio station to rap music when Brackish's hearing aid stops working. Often unintentionally funny ("my husband's a short order cook, he's not much of a mind for long sentences"), she is equally captivating in her rare moments of self-reflection: "the repetition, that's what scares me too, the feeling waking up that I've done all this before...
...Demolition Man has to tell. For all its sanctimoniousness, San Angeles is a fascist state. Its smooth-spoken leader, Raymond Cocteau (Nigel Hawthorne), is annoyed by a persistent band of rebels, living where such folk always do in fictions like this, in the city's underground passages. There they cook hamburgers (well, actually, they're ratburgers), swill beer and dream of cholesterol's restoration. ...suit. Equally menacing to stability, an Abkhazian victory would demolish Shevardnadze's credibility as the only leader capable of holding the country together. That danger prompted him to issue a televised call to arms, appealing "to all men with guns to go to defend Sukhumi." Together with his physician, cook and the rest of his personal staff, Shevardnadze headed for the embattled city, pledging to remain with the defenders "until the last drop of my blood...
