From these exchanges, some pundits drew the conclusion that the Secretary of State and the President had knocked down Author Beal's two points. Taking a cool look at the week's furor, however, the New York Times concluded that Secretary of State Dulles had "left Mr. Beal's central thesis substantially unchallenged.'' Heat Balance. To make observations beyond the earth's atmosphere, the instruments in a satellite must be kept fairly cool. The job is harder than it sounds. Space is neither hot nor cold, but an object exposed to sunlight in space may get pretty hot. The temperature that it reaches will depend on how its surface absorbs and emits radiation. Villon, having refined his palette to the utmost, "touched the earth once again" by returning in 1940 to the vibrant countryside of southwest France. Part of his latest harvest: his superb pastoral illustrations for Virgil's Eclogues (TIME COLOR PAGES, June 6, 1955). Today, at 81, the holder of nearly every award the art world...
