...film evokes late '50s psychodrama with more precision than it has any right to. The music alone, a collection of some of the coolest cool-cat classics of the period, captures that legendary moment when you were more likely to spot Chet Baker in a Naples jazz club than an upstate prison sickroom. The movie probably won't make any top-ten lists this winter--it's good, but it's not quite that deep--but I'll be damned if it doesn't have the wittiest opening credit sequence of the year.
