Albright Art Gallery's coup of the year in acquiring Clyfford Still's Red and Black reveals a direction that should catch on-artist selecting museum instead of the old-hat method of museum selecting artist. As for the Museum of Modern Art's having to cool its heels for two years in order to own Still's work-good. They're such an impulsive group...

Smoke in the Cellar. "Compared to the open, cordial, jovial Americans," he wrote of the momentous changeover in his early life, "the British were standoffish and haughty. I never learned to like them." He did learn to imitate their cool, diplomatic ways. As the years rolled by and Victor Emmanuel's monarchy gave way to Benito Mussolini's dictatorship, the village boy became a perfect embodiment of that superdiplomat-the diplomatic gentleman's gentleman. Space Toboggan. Professor of Aerodynamics Antonio Ferri of the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn is a skip man. He believes that a hypervelocity missile should spend only a short time in the heat-generating atmosphere, then soar up to peaceful space to cool off. Ferri's missile designed to follow this skip course (a "damped phugoid" in aerodynamic fancy-talk) is something like a V-nosed toboggan with curled up edges. The bottom and the outer sides of the curls are covered with heat-resisting ceramic, and the "controlled environment space" for a bomb or a crew to ride...
