...definition of "safe." If it means accident-proof, then the answer, as applied to anything from a bicycle to a steel mill, is no. A nuclear plant cannot blow up like an atomic bomb. A plant could, however, suffer a "meltdown" if it loses the water used to cool its uranium core, overheats, ruptures the core's container and releases a deadly cloud of radioactive gases. In the event of such an accident, people close to the plant would die quickly, while others, living as far as a couple of hundred miles downwind of the plant, might die later...
Experience shows that such safety features work. In 1975, a workman using a candle to test for air leaks accidentally started an electrical fire in the Browns Ferry nuclear plant at Athens, Ala. The fire short-circuited cables controlling the primary cooling system, causing loss of some of the nuclear-core cooling water. But nothing even close to a meltdown ensued. Although one of the back-up cooling systems was also disabled, technicians used other emergency circuits to cool the reactor down long before the situation approached the critical stage...
...other side of Haleakala, on the cool uplands above Wailea, on a clear day you can see, if not forever, a dazzling, dappled distance of meadow, mountain and sea. At the 2,000-to 3,000-ft. level, a host of small farms raise a cornucopia of vegetables, fruits and flowers, notably lychee, avocado, guava, the apple-sweet Kula onion and protea, the flower of a thousand exquisite shapes...
...Doors everywhere have slammed shut. Spain and Austria do not want the Shah. West Germany and France, both of which are big buyers of Iranian oil, make clear that he would not be welcome, while Britain, where the family owns a 166-acre estate outside London, is distinctly cool to his living there. Even Switzerland, the Shah's favorite vacation retreat, where he has extensive bank accounts and major property holdings including a villa near Saint-Moritz, acknowledges that a visit by the Shah would require prior Cabinet approval...
...through the big dates and broken marriages of their pasts, reviewing their child hood idols and latter-day saints. Anita Ellis recalls a memorable appearance with Billie Holiday: "I couldn't get over how she changed-from that naked, smoking, tough woman in the dressing room to the cool, motionless, vessel-of-life singer onstage." Joe Turner tells how as a teenager he wheedled his way into singing at a local Kansas City club: "The man who owned the joint . . . asked me how old I was, and I told him twenty, and he looked at me and said...
