...They're cool. So cool they can wear shades on the job and tote shiny gurns, license-free--and even use them at thier discretion, no questions asked. Heck, they can even obliterate people's memories with the blink of a red light. Who wouldn't want their job? Who else could they be but the Men in Black ("MiB" for short: beats "ID4" any day, doesn't it?), "protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe"? Who else could they be but Tommy Lee Jones '69 and Will Smith in one of the most hyped movies...
...tell you that most smokers want to quit. Maybe so. But the fact remains that many of them continue to smoke, and for many reasons. Those of an earlier generation--those few (ahem) still alive--began because Bogart and Bacall did it, and Bette Davis too: because it was cool and widely accepted. But later generations, at least those come of age after the unavoidable 1964 Surgeon General's report, found a different reason: because it was cool and widely reviled. Smoking today fits perfectly into the honored tradition of American individualism, a tradition as endemic as baseball or pickup...

(Discovery) is a rapturous blend of bluesy vocals and electro atmospherics; Carl Craig's More Songs about Food and Revolutionary Art (Planet E) is puckishly inventive; and The Rebirth of Cool FOUR (4th & Broadway) is an excellent compilation of electro acts. Later this year new CDs are due from two of the best electro acts, Goldie and Portishead...
