...Rather than barrage us with easy laugh getters, like images of earnest delegates showing off Dole hand puppets, CC's commentators worked hard at the convention, managing to extract humor from sources as unlikely as Congressman John Kasich, who talked to correspondent Al Franken about his fondness for Alice Cooper...
...house, persists in defending, against all logic, and McConaughey's boyish good looks and exquisite hair carry him through admirably. Yet it is often more compelling to watch Kiefer Sutherland, a brother of a slain redneck, encountering evil greater than himself during his Klan warm-up meeting, or Chris Cooper (again as a sheriff, markedly different from his "Lone Star" role) grimacing his way through shock and pain...
...become, in limited release, this summer's movie of choice for grownups who still regard intricate narrative and careful characterization as the most treasurable of special effects. There are no explosions here, just a skeleton unearthed from a shallow grave after a 30-year rest. Sam Deeds (Chris Cooper), sheriff in Frontera, a Texas border town where even corruption proceeds at a somnolent pace, has reason to believe these to be the earthly remains of a sadistic and crooked predecessor, Charley Wade (Kris Kristofferson). Kris Kristofferson, as Sheriff Wade in the many flashbacks, comes off as both The Bad and The Ugly: his character's ruthless, corrosive evil spirit has afflicted him with the all-business look of one unafraid to kill if necessary or, preferably, unnecessary. Elizabeth Pena is fine, resorting only once or twice to awkwardness to feign emotion. Despite the rare slow point (run-of-the-mill stories...
