...There are kids in this building. It probably would have bit them." In the end, it was Yates who was bitten, and although he first claimed that he had been attacked by a pit bull, someone tipped the police off to the real story. A cop eventually rappelled down the outside of the building, shot the tiger with a tranquilizer dart and ended the crisis. "This," police commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters, "is an only-in-New-York story...

...into a car. For days, Dave is held captive and sexually abused. A quarter-century later, all three of the old pals bear scars. Dave (Tim Robbins) is not so much the walking wounded as the walking dead, a zombie with a caring sadness. Sean (Kevin Bacon), now a cop, watched his wife walk out on him six months ago, but he's still faithfully married to his misery. Jimmy (Penn), who did time for a robbery in his youth, lavishes his burly, custodial affection on his daughter. And when the girl is murdered, it is Jimmy's turn...

The cop detects the fatal precision of professionals in this atrocious tableau: lives dispatched cleanly, corpses draped just so. "If you was a moron," he drawls, "you could almost admire...

...Sight's sensibility without repeating the movie, and itself: twice in two episodes we see Karen in flirtations with charismatic criminals and being taunted by creeps who don't think this little girl has the guts to shoot them. Its commercial challenge is to interest viewers in a cop with a personal life, in the time slot opposite NBC's no-feelings-please juggernaut Law & Order. If anyone can do that, it's Gugino, a potential breakout star, and not only for her Lynda Carter 2.0 looks. Pursuing a con man who marries and robs lonely rich women, Karen...
