...almost six months old. Pearl Harbor lay far behind, a symbol of heartbreaking disaster; Singapore had fallen, and so had Rangoon, and so had Corregidor. The U.S. fleet, though it had won a strategic edge, had been mauled, and the carrier Lexington sunk, in the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 4-8). Japan was threatening Australia, and her ships scouted with impunity around the Indian Ocean and Ceylon. The U.S., a long way yet from the glory days of island landings, had to latch on to the one little triumph of Jimmy Doolittle's 30 seconds over Tokyo...
When the U.S. aircraft carrier Bennington sailed majestically into Sydney Harbor to help Australia celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 7, 1942), its 2,970 officers and men were blithely unaware of one important matter: the University of Sydney would hold its annual Commemoration Day festivities, when students stage zany parades, pull off outlandish pranks, and badger citizens for donations to charity. Acting is, with one reservation, on a distinguished level. Paul Rogers, as Macbeth, is marvelous. Probably the outstanding member of the troop, he grows with Macbeth to a superb fiery level. His violent face and boiling characterization is what the role of Macbeth deserves. Coral Browne's Lady Macbeth, though, was intense but somewhat bouncy. She looked wrong, except, perhaps, in her sleep-walking scene. To fulfill my demands for the role of Lady Macbeth would take a rare actress, which, I am afraid, Miss Browne is not. John Neville as MacDuff, Jeremy Brett as Malcolm, and Jack Gwillim...
Died. Vice Admiral (ret.) Wilson Brown, 74, U.S.N., naval aide to Presidents Coolidge, Hoover, Roosevelt and Truman, onetime superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy (1938-41), who led a task force in the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, won a Distinguished Service Medal; in Groton, Conn...
