...have no ceiling fan, then how about a Dove-Tech corn-burning stove? It's too early to tell for certain how well this really works -- only 4,000 have been sold so far -- but it sure seems to solve a lot of problems: the energy crisis (we're the Saudi Arabia of corn), the pollution crisis (the kernels burn far cleaner than wood, coal or oil), the farm crisis (Dove-Tech will even burn moldy surplus), the trade deficit (American corn, not imported oil), the deforestation crisis (chop corn, not trees), the safety crisis (corn isn't dangerous...

...upside-down '90s. Not since collapsing oil prices sent Texas and the rest of the Southwest into a slump nearly a decade ago has the U.S. witnessed such a stunning reversal of regional fortunes. The new winners include Midwestern farmers and Rustbelt manufacturers whose prosaic products, from corn to machine tools, are in hot demand around the world. A fish-and- game-commission biologist said, "Rather than have farmers kill the bears, we would rather have sportsmen utilize the resource." You get used to blood- sport bureaucratese; "utilize,"or "harvest," is what you do when you get something fuzzy and four-footed in your sights. As in most states, New Hampshire's fish and game policies often seem to be caught in a time warp, perhaps in the decade of the 1820s...
