...traveler, a Middle Westerner turned self-made Eastern snob, assumes nothing else interesting has ever happened in Bloomington. The traveler is wrong. Bloomington, Ill., is the county seat of McLean County. If you are talking corn and soybeans, McLean County is the capital of the world. If you are talking heartland, you are standing on it: topsoil two, three, five feet deep, divided on the plot map into square-mile sections still owned by descendants of German and Scotch-Irish immigrants who cleared and settled their way across Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Indiana, out onto the prairie. If you are talking...

...history of McLean County during this century is mostly a story of dreams richly come true. The seed the Funk brothers developed yields 150 to 160 bushels of corn an acre. The Funk Prairie Home, once center of a 25,000-acre farm, is now a museum, and the seed company is a division of Ciba-Geigy. Land that McNulta bought for $150 an acre now hovers around $4,000 an acre, too much for anyone ever to start out farming there now, but not a bad price for to day's farmer/investor to use as a tax write...

...disastrous 1979 grain harvest. Largely because of bad weather, Brezhnev announced, this year's crop amounted to only 179 million tons-47 million tons short of the target, and the worst harvest since 1975. The U.S.S.R. has already contracted to buy 25 million tons of American wheat and corn and will probably purchase at least 7 million tons from other countries. Soviet production of oil, natural gas and electric power also fell short of targeted goals in 1979, which Brezhnev aptly described as "a very difficult year...

Growing consumer consciousness about health has helped the market. Flower oil costs 10% to 15% more than oil made from corn or soybeans, but its cholesterol content is lower; it has 70% polyunsaturated fats, vs. about 55% for corn oil. Hunt-Wesson in September began national distribution of a flower oil named Sunlite. Procter & Gamble is selling a blend of flower and soybean oil called Puritan, and Lever Brothers is marketing Promise, a part-flower margarine...

...above-ground method in which the shale is "distilled" in somewhat the same way that moonshiners extract alcohol from corn mash. After the shale is mined, the rock is crushed. Union Oil then moves shale chunks through a towering surface retort, where hot gases heat it to release the kerogen. Colony uses a different process: it cooks finely ground shale in giant drums by mixing the marl with superheated, marble-size ceramic balls that distribute the temperature evenly and vaporize the kerogen. The balls are then separated from the spent shale by a screen, reheated and used again...
