Engineers on these projects and two others--an ultraviolet coronograph designed by Astronomy Lecturer John Kohl and an ultraviolet spectrometer by William Parkinson--say they anxiously awaited a returned emphasis on scientific endeavors in space...
John Kohl, an associate of the Harvard College Observatory, has designed an ultraviolet coronograph for the space shuttle that will take advantage of Columbia's position above the earth's atmosphere. A coronograph is a telescope engineered specifically for observing the corona, the outer atmosphere of the sun, by blocking the light of the sun's disk. The corona, an area of extremely low density and high temperature, can be most clearly observed naturally during a solar eclipse. Kohl's coronograph would pick up the ultraviolet light emitted by the corona and analyse it to reveal the density and velocity...
...coronograph is designed to create an artificial solar eclipse, thereby permitting observation of the ultraviolet rays of the corona, the portion of the sun's atmosphere which extends well beyond the visible disk...
...flare, recorded last month, set a record for all such occurrences observed. The movies were taken with a coronograph, a special telescopic instrument, at the Air Force's Sacramento Observatory in New Mexico...
Research here is carried on with coronographs, flare photometers, and smaller equipment. The coronograph being installed this year is the largest in the world. The principal studies of this station will involve careful observations...
