...financial editor of the Dallas Morning News in the 1920s and 1930s-and later-I watched Merrill Lynch grow from a few docile dogies and mavericks in the small corral and then saw them emerge as the thundering herd. They are today a great aggregation and well deserve the spread TIME gave them...

Swooping in Seconds. What happened to Mrs. Placente was the first public demonstration of "Operation Corral"-an acronym that police flacks spell out as "Computer Oriented Retrieval of Auto Larcenists." The core of Corral is a borrowed UNIVAC 490, one of Sperry Rand's $500,000 "real time" computers that can analyze an event while the event is happening. Corral's UNIVAC has been fed the license numbers of 30,000 stolen cars and the cars of 80,000 scofflaws-traffic violators who neglect to answer summonses or pay fines...

Since 65% to 90% of reported crimes involve cars, the cops see Corral as the sharpest new weapon in their fast-growing arsenal of computerized devices against crime (TIME, July 30). Though that is something to cheer about, last week's demonstration had the circus look of an elephant swatting a gnat. At least some of Mrs. Placente's ambushers might have been more profitably engaged in solving real crimes that occur in New York City on an average day: one murder, four rapes, 22 holdups, 41 assaults, 117 grand larcenies, 123 burglaries. Taken to court, Mrs. Placente...

Africa-Bound. Mclntire believes that Africa, with its missionary-planted roots, is particularly susceptible to the fundamentalist approach, and plans a proselytizing trip there this fall. He crows about some schismatic Nigerian parishes that have recently joined the L.C.C.C., and hopes to corral other dissidents such as Kenya's Bishop Matthew Ajouga, who walked out of the Anglican Communion. Asia is also Mclntire's happy hunting ground. He claims that a majority of Korea's Protestants, as well as many from Taiwan and the Philippines, are represented in the L.C.C.C...

...Panamanian freighter El Corral and onto Pier 27 in Belgium's port of Antwerp last week tramped 867 head of Texas cattle−on a one-way trip. They were the forerunners of a U.S. attempt to successfully export U.S. beef on the hoof to Europe, which has long had a prejudice against more easily transported frozen beef. The cattle were not the only American arrivals in European ports. U.S. farm exports are pouring into the Common Market at so fast a pace that they have become a major point of discord at Kennedy Round meetings between...
