...TIME'S knowledge of the Scriptures is lamentable. Recently the Atlantic Monthly spoke ignorantly of the "parable" of the Widow's Mite. TIME showed just as profound ignorance [Sept. 26] when she corrected Mr. A. F. Higgins' misquotation of Scripture in a footnote, but failed to correct Mr. Higgins' second Scripture reference. "PornoGraphic" can humbly pray with the Samaritan: "Oh, Lord, be merciful to me a Samaritan," and his words were "God, be merciful to me a Sinner." ...principal performers are Beth Merrill and Philip Merivale; and the subject is sex. Mr. Belasco has held U. S. attention for many years, and sex has held it even longer. But both, unfortunately, have lost to some extent their novelty for playgoers. ALFRED E. SMITH-Henry F. Pringle-Macy-Masius ($3). "Al Smith's face is always reddish. In the heat of a vehement address it becomes crimson. He sweats ... he is all that could be desired of a Governor, even by the most correct of critics. . . . His tailoring is immaculate, there is about him just a trace of his trucking days. ... He is discordant, often awkward, lacking in versatility. . . . Tremendously effective. . . ." It is difficult, in writing the biography of a living statesman, to indicate his character without becoming technically libelous. This difficulty Author Pringle has met rather than avoided...

Under their respective constitutions four political units of the United States style themselves Commonwealths: Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Virginia and Kentucky. Since the time of the Revolutionary war under four different constitutions the legal title of Penn's Woods has been the "Commonwealth of Pennsylvania." To be technically correct in speaking of the United States, it should be said the nation consists of 44 States and four Commonwealths...
