Last week, as the first phase of the rock analysis neared completion in Houston's Lunar Receiving Lab, it was Urey's young critics who seemed to have been wrong. Though they were correct in saying that the samples gathered up in the Sea of Tranquillity had once been molten rock, they appear to have been far off the mark in estimating their age. President Nixon has publicly assured banks that the legislation will pass; since it is retroactive, he has urged them to proceed with loans as if the bill were law. Even if the President's prediction is correct, countless students will suffer financial and educational losses from the delay, especially incoming freshmen who are applying for loans for the first time. To preserve an elegance of sorts, it established a new kind of court: a panel of 104 reasonably literate Americans -including writers, scholars, editors and a U.S. Senator-who spent the past four years judging correct word usage for American Heritage's forthcoming dictionary, which will be published jointly with Houghton Mifflin Co. next month.
