...much sooner. The note was struck to cheers from a student audience in Iowa last week by George McGovern when he asked: "Why, Mr. Nixon, did you take another four years to put an end to this tragic war?" For McGovern and many Americans, the Thieu regime was so corrupt, the war so immoral, the cost in lives and national spirit so debilitating, that instant U.S. withdrawal from Viet Nam had long since been justified. Nixon, of course, rejected unilateral withdrawal by the U.S. from the outset of his Administration. He was convinced that America's role in the world...
...route there were also hundreds of hand lettered posters and these were the clearest expression of the mood of those who had turned out to say what they thought of Four More Years Among the anti Nixon posters were Robots for Nixon People For McGovern. ...their art, and in that way much unlike their successors, Gov. Preston Smith and his crew, who bumbled their way into a widely publicized stock scandal. As the leader of the Dirty Thirty, a group of "suicide" liberal legislators, "Sissy" Farenthold was able to expose some of the corrupt, clandestine practices of the Smith group. Last spring Farenthold lost a run-off for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination to Dolph Briscoe, a conservative of the Connally line, by a margin of 55-45. Briscoe will win easily on November 7, but Farenthold's showing was the best ever by a Texas...

Time and time again he calls the Nixon Administration "the most corrupt in the history of American politics." He has repeatedly called President Thieu "savage and corrupt and immoral." These rhetorical excesses, while perhaps satisfying to many of his more committed supporters, do little to convince people to support him. Most people who vote in American presidential elections want a moderate candidate, and McGovern does little in his public orating to discourage claims...
...chuckle at Watergate. The war is too horrible to think about. We are alienated from each other. We no longer care for our neighbors, or for people dying around the world. We know Government is corrupt, but we simply shrug. We don't care any more. Richard Nixon, in four years, has been able to pull off what no outside power ever could-the crushing of the spirit of the American people. McGovern represents new hope, but we have been hurt once too often. And so we will vote for four more years of Nixon...
