...long-stemmed can-can dancers kick, whirl and cartwheel, split, shimmy and pirouette to Offenbach's rollicking La Vie Parisienne. In a reverse striptease, a comely Victorian lass in black stockings and garter belt dresses up in corset and crinoline for a grand occasion orchestrated by Strauss. The star of the show, callipygian Linda Bardot, clad mostly in a pearly headdress, twirls around under a filigreed umbrella, mouthing in puffick Cockney Oi'm Aownly aye Bird in aye Gilded Cayge. Between and after the twice-nightly shows, the place becomes a disco where the windows vibrate past midnight...
...star is discovered, between acts, in his dressing room. He is wearing a Viking's helmet, complete with horns, over a wig of lank brown hair, a corset over a lace shirt. On his right hand there is a boxing glove. He claims, in the rich, ripe tones of yesteryear's provincial matinee idol, that he was about to do his imitation of Queen Victoria, but that he has forgotten what she looks like. When it isn't under orders to move, it sits blankly on the stage, obscurred from the view of everybody sitting farther back than the third...

This shaft sits on an entrance block that is an enormous pastiche of the courtyard front of Brunelleschi's 15th century Pazzi Chapel in Florence. One cannot guess from drawings or models how well this will work. To take a small, private Renaissance chapel and inflate it to nearly the size of the Baths of Caracalla is the kind of perversity Johnson enjoys but has never been allowed to do on such a scale before...
...most of the season in the shop for repairs as a rash of injuries crippled key players. The first team played together only 22 times in the first 78 games. Catcher Johnny Bench has missed 33 games with a back injury suffered during an aborted slide. Wearing a thick corset, he is hitting .254 (compared with...
