Others see posthumous salvation in terms of some kind of cosmic evolution toward perfection. According to the late Jesuit Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, man is evolving toward an "Omega point," or ultimate encounter with God. To Methodist Schilling, the phenomenon involves "the ongoing life of the whole person, not of the body in the physical sense, but of something equivalent to what a body is, a notion of renewal rather than mere survival, in ways that we cannot know. It is a matter of faith, but I think a reasonable and intelligent faith...

...strong attraction of one quark for another has actually hindered the great quark hunt. To split a proton into its constituent quarks, for example, would require an atom smasher at least 30 times more powerful than any yet built by man. But scientists believe that the celestial processes generating cosmic rays are energetic enough to produce free quarks...

...South Pole the North. During these reversals, scientists theorize, the intensity of the earth's magnetic field actually decreased to zero, then built back up with opposite polarity. During the temporary absence of a strong magnetic field, the earth was left without its protective shield; as a consequence, cosmic-ray particles that were normally deflected by the magnetic field could shower through the atmosphere. The result may have been the destruction, mutation or even creation of species. Scientists know that such reversals occur every 500,000 to 1,000,000 years. But they do not know exactly what causes...

...inheritors of the great Eastern civilizations. Behind so much of the economic and social stagnation in India and elsewhere is the passivity toward values outside those of family and community. There must be a reconciliation between Western values of materialism and individual liberty and the Eastern concept of a "cosmic rhythm" to which we are all subordinated. This balance has been struck most effectively since the war (and as a result of it) in Japan. It makes me look to that country as the emerging power that will lead the way economically and spiritually in the 21st century...

...cope with every ancient phase of Chinese mentality, from its basic view of man to the minutest daily practices. The traditional Chinese view of the universe does not, as in the West, see a struggle between good and evil. The famous principles of Yin and Yang imply an alternate cosmic rhythm but not a struggle. Nor is there a relationship of struggle-or love or dialogue-between man and God. China is agnostic and scarcely knows a religion in the Western sense. Confucian teaching is not concerned with metaphysics. As the Master once told his disciples: "Till you have learned...
