...remote-controlled mechanical arm for another first: the deployment of a 30-ft.-long cylindrical package, called the long-duration exposure facility (LDEF), which contains 57 separate scientific experiments contributed by nearly 200 scientists in nine countries. LDEF will be left in orbit 10½ months to collect cosmic materials, test solar cells and measure the effects of space on a variety of materials, including 12 million tomato seeds, which will be distributed next year to biology students. Other passengers on the flight: 3,300 honeybees, which are being sent aloft because one collegian wants to see if the insects...

Your examination of the papal visit to Agca catches precisely the cosmic dimension of the Pope's forgiving act. When all the Caesar-vs.-God distinctions have been made, when all the private morality-vj.-public policy nuances have been noted, the fundamental truth remains. Plato put it well when he described the state as "man writ large...

Finally my old acquaintance John comes over, says hello, and once again dumps the teacup over. He asks me to silently ponder a question while he stares at me, picking up the cosmic vibrations. At first he talks about funds again, assuring me my shortage, will be relieved soon, and I won't have any problems in the next month or so. My guess is that he started with money again because I was wearing a tattered shirt and an old dirty coat much too light for the freezing winds. But he changes the subject soon, perhaps sensing my boredom...

...liberal Roman Catholic journal Commonweal proclaims: "Orwell, if he were alive today, would make a worthy opponent for the multinational corporation. He could have made an idea and a book on 'organization man' stand up and sing." The conservative National Review concludes an essay on Orwell with cosmic theatrics: "The forces of darkness have huge armies, a bigger and better arsenal, liberation movements, and the whores' allegiance. The forces of light have Orwell on their side and draw strength from it." On the other side of the barricades, the radlib Village Voice waves a special issue devoted...

...designers call its "long module": the two cylinders have been mated to form one continuous workshop, about 13 ft. in diameter and 23 ft. in length. Positioned between the extended cylinder and the shuttle's tail assembly is a single pallet, holding 18 experiments, involving such equipment as cosmic-ray detectors, spectrometers and TV cameras. On future flights, as the experimental load increases, the tunnel can be lengthened and additional pallets added...
