Nothing about Reagan is spectacular--except his continuing success. Almost nothing that Reagan does is all that great--but he does something. The lions of the liberal-policy elite of Washington, so enamored of cosmic theories and academic credentials, have retreated into a sullen silence. "They harbor a horrible resentment of Reagan because he is not following their prescriptions on how to run the world," says one scholar. "Worse, he is successful...

Oddly enough, Baer is the most shaded character in the film, in his way prefiguring a more modern ambiguity. But the film is most significantly about puzzled people trying to comprehend the cosmic reversal of fortune that was the Depression. They don't have much more than raw courage and simple virtues to rely on. Unlike most period pieces, Cinderella Man encourages us to fondly recall not songs or clothes but values we have largely mislaid. Look on the faces of the elder Braddocks when they realize they don't have enough fried bologna to feed their kids...

...third suggestion, the Overpowering Assumption, I think is best. But not for the reasons he suggests—that the assumption is so cosmic that it might be accepted. It is rarely “accepted;” we aren’t here to accept or reject—we’re here to be amused. ...stand video games? Then you maybe on your wayto becoming a top game designer. That, at least, is the counterintuitive experience of Keita Takahashi, the Japanese creator of the offbeat international hit known as Katamari Damacy. The addictive game involves a cosmic prince rolling a sticky ball around a colorful landscape filled with things to pick up; it looks like manga meets Monty Python and sounds like Hello Kitty does hip-hop, and that has everything to do with the creator's inexperience. "I don't play games," he insists. "There are too many unoriginal ones...
