...York's Governor, Alfred Emanuel Smith, issued the state's financial statement for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1927. It showed a surplus of $13,965,345 in the state treasury. Governor Smith mentioned that the cost of government in New York has risen $135,961,870 since 1917. Said he: "I am ready at all times and at all places to defend the policy of my Administrations in the handling of the state's business. Irvin Nixon, the 15-year-old Hertford youth, victim of a ghastly practical joke which nearly cost him his life, was released from the Elizabeth City Hospital Sunday morning. Young Nixon was brought to the hospital last week in a frightful condition from the effects of a blast of air from a powerful air compressor injected into his interior by a playmate. The nozzle of the air hose was thrust into the posterior of the youth and the air blast literally blew the contents of his bowels up and through his mouth and nostrils. He was brought to the hospital...
After a seven-week convention at Cleveland, which cost more than $1,000,000 in expenses, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers last week voted to eliminate the office of "president" in their organization. The Brotherhood was displeased with Mr. Prenter because during his incumbency the investments made by their banks and other financial agencies had depreciated in value by several millions of dollars. Their Florida boom town, Venice, had cost them too dearly...

The plant required to transmit this amount will be much smaller than some of the wireless telegraph plants now existing and will cost only $10,000,000, including water development and electrical apparatus. The effect will be the same whether the distance is one mile...
Last week a white marble staircase which spirals from the first to the fourth floor of Elbert Henry Gary's Fifth Avenue mansion in Manhattan went begging for a buyer at $1. Twelve years ago the staircase cost $150,000. Today it could hardly be duplicated for twice that sum. But because modern homes want no white marble staircases, because the labor of removing this one intact would cost thousands of dollars, the wrecking company which will raze Judge Gary's home to the ground to make way for a large co-operative apartment house, has decided...
