Modern man, the only living species of a once numerous human family, is as definitely pigeonholed in the animal world by taxonomists (biological classifiers) as is Sylvilagus floridanus, the cottontail rabbit. The gun-shooting, crystal-gazing, ballot-casting species-called Homo sapiens by taxonomic courtesy-belongs to the genus homo, the family of Hominidae, the order of primates, the class of mammals, the subphylum of vertebrates, the phylum of Chordata, and to the animal kingdom...
...soon obvious that a good many animals did not regard Shiva Temple as a "biological island." Naturalists Anthony and Andrews trapped or shot more mice, woodrats, chipmunks, a cottontail rabbit and observed droppings of deer and coyote all over the place. Even humans had ascended Shiva Temple, as primitive tools and ornaments attested. Eight days after the expedition began Mr. Andrews came down to admit that none of the specimens was "spectacular." Leader Anthony, however, thought he detected a "pale characteristic" in the animals-for example, a grey stripe in the chipmunks-and unusually "xerophytic" plants.* The mosquitoes, he said...

...secret studio to which he escapes from moppets who make pilgrimages to the Peter Rabbit Man. He collects Spanish furniture, ship models, Persian ceramics. He travels where he will when he will, and life has left him, at the age of 56, as healthy and bright-eyed as Caleb Cottontail himself...
...dodo (TIME, Sept. 14, p. 40) is, to the writer's untrained eye, much like a stuffed restoration of the dodo which is prominently displayed in the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh bird differs from the Iowa reproduction principally in having a feathered tail instead of the cottontail effect, the coloring is apparently somewhat more uniform and there are slight differences above the eyes. Why then can Iowa claim "the only Stuffed replica in the world of the dodo?". . . L. L. NETTLETON Pittsburgh, Pa. There is also a reconstructed dodo in the American Museum of Natural History, Manhattan...
