More impressive than the acting are the attractive set and cleverly used special effects. Behind the central couch, a different framed print hangs for each of the six scenes, each time keyed to the particular mood of the scene. The well-chosen prints ranged from Warhol's iconic Campbell's Soup can to a Chagall print to Munch's The Scream. Another striking feature of the set was a medicine chest in which Kitty keeps her "blue wonder drug"--actually blue M&M's--as she nicknames the poison gas pills. Smoke billows out from the eerily lit medicine cabinet...
...markets will be getting the richer television signal--which includes lush digital sound and a crystal-clear picture. Still, few analysts expect HDTV to take off anytime before the millennium. Between the $3,000 price tag for the sets and the slow arrival of new programming, couch potatoes may have to stew a bit longer...
...night after the Inaugural, Bill and I gathered with our family in the solarium on the third floor of the White House. After dinner our toddler nephews Tyler and Zachary climbed up on the couch with their Uncle Bill to hear him read a story. Though rarely attempting the social warmth of his mother (he doesn't actually offer me a Fresca but acquiesces when I ask), Gates has an intensity and enthusiasm that can be engaging, even charming. He takes a piece of paper and draws the matrix...
...Patriots' winning ways and playoff spot could be misunderstood as a regular occurrence. But for those of us aware of the gloomy history, this team is finally doing what it should have done several years ago. We've put in the blood, sweat and tears (or at least the couch-potato minutes) to really appreciate every successful touchdown pass. Thus, it is our job to educate our dormmates, reminding them of the pain of every interception or fourth-down failure. "Look," I say excitedly. "We actually converted on 4th and 1!" My friends have learned to just nod and smile...
