What we realize now is that Agassi's aren't mere comebacks; they are reinventions. In 1994 he reappeared as the Zen Master. Refreshed by the analyst's couch and the preachments of coach Brad Gilbert, Agassi drifted through the U.S. Open draw, unseeded and unheeded, until he was the only one standing--a focused player on the court, a spouter of self-improvement blather off it. Hey, it was Deepak/Oprah...

Last week I stood on the sidewalk with my two favorite young cousins and watched as one of those giant moving vans pulled up to their front door. Before we knew it, five guys in backward baseball caps were waltzing the family couch down the front steps and into the truck. Mom and dad were still packing boxes; no one could find the key to the front door; and the family cat was under the porch, threatening to join the ASPCA. Moving day had arrived. ...Dole could vault her back to first-alternative status, especially if Bush comes out with something the press deems disappointing. For Dan Quayle and Gary Bauer, it?s a bid for the remaining attentions of the religious right. ...female friend recently suffered a classic contemporary dilemma: What to furnish the apartment with first, a couch or a video-games console? A couch is nice to sit on, but a console is "a man magnet," she decided. "No male can resist the challenge." I knew what she meant. For mindless fun, you can't beat a console evening. Invite your friends over, gather round the TV, crack open a six-pack and get down to the serious business of knocking the stuffing out of them. It does wonders for your social life...

...serious contender in the new console wars. It does have design flaws. The controller isn't as comfortable as Sony's or Nintendo's, for one. The connecting wire comes out player-side rather than console-side, which can be irksome if you do happen to have a couch and want to sit on it while playing. But Sega's machine passes the all-important test: it's a blast to play with your buddies. Just ask my girlfriend, who spent hours testing the Dreamcast version of Mortal Kombat with me--and dished out a thorough whupping. Man magnet? More...
