Died. John F. Dowd, 60, who served as Time Inc.'s chief editorial counsel for 28 years; of heart disease; in Boston. The son of a New York City policeman, Dowd was graduated from St. John's University and Harvard Law School, and worked briefly for a Wall Street firm before coming to TIME as its first in-house counsel.
