...Historical Baggage The presidential election, though, is far from over. Ma has a potential Achilles heel - the mere fact that he's KMT. Hsieh can count on a full third of the electorate to vote against the KMT under almost any circumstances. Ma has tried to counter by appearing more sensitive to issues of Taiwanese identity. He has spent long stretches in the island's south - DPP territory - where he often bypasses hotels to stay in the homes of ordinary folk. At one rally of labor unionists in Taipei, Ma made sure to lead the crowd in cheers of "Taiwan...

...Israeli operations have crushed many underground cells but insist that after Hamas won the Palestinian election in January 2006, its political wing abandoned suicide bombings in a fruitless effort to gain international recognition. Retired Brigadier Shalom Harari, now an expert on Palestinian affairs at the International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism in Herzliya, disputes the claim. "Suicide bombings lessened because of 70% prevention by the Israeli forces, 10% by the Palestinian Authority and 20% because of luck," he says...

Nevertheless, there is an underlying sentiment in these lamentations—however awfully distorted and misdirected—with which one can sympathize, something completely absent amongst the counter-complainers, who are no less obnoxious. Where were they–given their claims of moral superiority and wisdom—when Harvard lost over 350 million dollars in a hedge fund last year? Or when the administration breached its contract with its workers? Of course, they were too jaded to care. For these people, it seems that it’s the feeling of superiority over their classmates that matters...
