Died. Rear Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, 86, commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor during the devastating Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941; of a heart attack; in Groton, Conn. In a military investigation following the Pearl Harbor debacle, Kimmel and his Army counterpart, Lieut. General Walter C. Short, were charged with "unpreparedness" in allowing themselves to be caught so totally by surprise. Both were relieved of command after which they quickly retired from service.
