Usage:

...exactly what you'll be expecting after a few minutes of listening, as Rainbow sounds a lot like Butterfly, her previous album. To the album's credit, Jay-Z, Usher, Snoop and Missy Elliott are featured, although Jay-Z seems to be wanting nave Annie-esque samples for counterpoint--not that Mariah sounds particularly world-weary when she sings about her "Heartbreaker" boyfriend. And Rainbow is so mainstream, so generic, that Snoop and Missy Elliott sound like animals in a porcelain party. Your Tupperware and slumber party crowd will do far better to rent The Rainbow Connection...

In the background was a blown up version of his album cover, with lighting set to highlight lu Cont's flaming crimson hair. Jim Carmichael, the drummer, dressed in somber black, was the more sedate counterpoint to all that energy. Somebody had to hold down the fort, apparently...

...such, down to Martin Ledyard's hip stylised cover art. "Songe" and the impossibly beautiful "Call Waiting" both blend in the stuttering backbeats of 90s R&B, while the inclusion of rapper Black Thought (from the Roots, Philly's famed hip-hop collective) on "Rafiki" makes a great counterpoint to Daulne's scat. Perhaps it's odd that a group that uses its foray into technology so well should decry its dehumanizing effects in their lyrics, but this album is so in the zone, it doesn't matter...

Not surprisingly, on this more rockin' than swingin' installment of the piano/bass/drum combination, not so much more than a few prickles of the late Evans can be felt. But so can a bit of the Well-Tempered counterpoint and the old Ludwig van. Worth buying for those liner notes alone...
