...intriguing moments came after the band had left the stage, only to return for the increasingly requisite encore performance (the second encore is the new encore, after all). The finale was begun with a cover of “Inside of You,” by the similarly outlandish countryish troubadour named Tom Jans. The song reflected a lot of Oldham’s own tendencies, including his bizarrely overt and yet endearing tendency to inject sexual references into otherwise Platonic enough songs of love lost and found (well, mostly lost). The group followed this cover with a beautiful, shuffling...
...than the typical Top 40 tune: the clever I Hung My Head, with its commanding horns and elevating keyboard work, tells the story of an accidental shooting, and could also be read as a plea for gun control; I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying is a countryish tune that clomps along with a steady beat but is also a well-observed look at a divorced man dealing with the fact that he has lost custody of his kids. ...Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is playing at the Performance Center this weekend. These guys put out a lot of nice but dull records; they only really shine in person. The group leans mostly toward a countryish sort of tune, always cleverly conceived and masterfully carried out. They've been working pretty often with Earl Scruggs in the past couple of years and they've learned their lessons from the old banjo picking wizard. The reason these dirty boys are so good in concert is that they have an amazingly friendly stage personality. They seem like such good fellows that...
