Muzorewa's failure to develop a reform program has diminished support among his black countrymen. Said a disgruntled black in Salisbury last week: "The bishop is consistently honest in one respect. He hasn't promised anything because he can't deliver anything." The restiveness was reflected in the recent defection from Muzorewa's parliamentary party of seven M.P.s, led by Joseph Chikerema, who are seeking to form a rival bloc. The defections potentially reduce Muzorewa's parliamentary support to a minority of 44 seats in the 100-member assembly, meaning that the bishop...

...seeded Vitas Gerulaitis, 24. "I consider myself basically a pretty horrendous grass player," DuPre said afterward. Four matches later, in one of the most uproarious quarter finals ever staged on hallowed Center Court, DuPre outgunned the handsome, acrobatic Italian, Adriano Panatta, 29, thereby silencing thousands of his screaming, chanting countrymen, who were unkindly dubbed the "Spaghetti Brigade" by the British press. In the event of another border clash with the People's Republic, the Chinese have been told, they face "liquidation" or imprisonment. In what was formerly South Viet Nam, there are regular announcements by radio and wall poster...

...organized and safe departure of those who want to leave the country." Besides, it added gratuitously, the refugee problem was rooted in the period when "U.S. imperialism dominated the south of Viet Nam." In point of fact, that is not true; the enmity between the Vietnamese and their Chinese countrymen is an ancient one, and Hanoi's policy of expelling the Chinese is not a direct result of U.S. intervention in Southeast Asia...

...like a carnival, a political campaign, a crusade and an enormous Polish wedding all in one. Almost from the moment his Alitalia 727 plane deposited Pope John Paul II in Warsaw and he knelt, in his gleaming white cas sock, to kiss the earth of Poland, his countrymen converged upon him in joyful and dumbfounding millions. Babies, brought to be kissed or blessed. Grandmothers in bandannas. The teenage young flocking to him like rock fans afflicted with Beatlemania. Hard-faced coal miners, pampered by the workers' party, gathering around him by tens of thousands and roaring out the words...
