Anchor. Franco has notably failed to prepare his countrymen for the upheaval that could follow more than three decades of one-man rule. Six years ago, to be sure, he did draw up a "law of succession." Under that law and codicils added to it last July, el Caudillo will be succeeded by two men. Prince Juan Carlos de Borbón y Borbón, 34, grandson of Alfonso XIII, the last Spanish monarch, will be crowned King and chief of state. The head of government will be Vice Admiral Luis Carrero Blanco, 69, a Franco crony...

...more. He thought deeply about politics and acted on his precepts. He wrote a number of political novels that, for all their playfulness and cynicism, come to grips with flesh-and-blood people. In the manner of the best European conservatives, Disraeli felt a strong attachment to his fellow countrymen even when he mocked them or they reviled him. Nixon may feel the same way, but Disraeli displayed a passion that is generally lacking in American conservatives, including Nixon. Kaunda's nervousness can also be attributed to his country's economic problems. Despite the drop in copper revenues, Kaunda is under pressure from his countrymen to maintain the momentum of development of roads, schools and hospitals as well as housing...

...Godard and Rocha, even though these guys are in the baby league as far as politicians go. For my money, the best political film ever made is called Salvatore Giuliano, and was made by an Italian Marxist. Francesco Rosi, in 1962. He was one of the first of his countrymen to reveal the linkages of local corruption in any hardnosed way, while debunking Sicilian outlaw mythology. Rosi shows what really happened to the legendary Guihano after World War II, when he was paid by the Mafia to attack growing native Communism, and then was himself assassinated. Rosi was not interested...
