Last week the Communist coup of 1949 was dramatically undone. The Privy Council reversed the Hong Kong judgments. A few hours later, at 2 a.m., 500 heavily armed British police and troops descended upon the Hong Kong airfield. They seized the disputed planes, rounded up 150 sleepy Communist guards who sullenly chanted Red songs as they were hauled away in trucks. Two days later, 40 of the planes bearing the insignia CATC (for the former Central Air Transport Corp.) were turned over to C.A.T. The remaining 31, involved in similar litigation, will unquestionably be awarded to C.A.T...
Hastily the army released them. It was all a mistake resulting from a phony tip that the Amins had tried to get the British to block General Naguib's coup. General Naguib ordered his personal apology broadcast all day long over the Cairo radio. Naguib made it up in another way; he gave the twins a two-hour exclusive interview supplying a firsthand account of the revolt he led against Farouk. Said Mustafa happily as he left the general: "May you commit 10,000 more errors as harmless as this if it will help bring the real culprits...
Bloodless Coup. Communist plots soon took away the King's fun. Pardoned by the French, Son Ngoc Thanh returned to Pnompenh. His Pnompenh newspaper, Khmer People Awake, sowed disaffection in the royal army. Viet Minh Communist battalions, 10,000 strong, skirmished along Cambodia's borders, and Son Ngoc Thanh cheered them on. Suddenly last month the King reacted. He closed down Khmer People Awake. Son Ngoc Thanh ducked off to join a band of Red guerrillas...
CZECHOSLOVAKIA-Represented at the first Cominform meeting by Rudolf Slansky. A fierce, red-haired butcher's son who became the Kremlin's hatchet man in Czechoslovakia, he was considered the real power behind Klement Gottwald, front man in the coup of 1948. But in Czechoslovakia's recent struggle for power, it was Gottwald, not Slansky, who came out on top. Accused of "activities against the state" last December, Slansky was stripped of all offices. Disposition: "in custody," awaiting trial...
Koje Island's new prison commandant, a first-class combat man, emerged last week as a soldier who could also use his wits in the most disagreeable of rear-area jobs. Boldly and shrewdly, Brigadier General Haydon L. Boatner had chosen Compound 76, scene of the Dodd-Colson coup, as the first to be tackled in bringing order to the prison. After the bloody battle in which Compound 76's 6,000 hard-core Communists were subdued (TIME, June 16), the other tough enclosures on Koje toppled like ninepins, with no further fighting between guards and prisoners...
