...mounting body count in the south dashes hopes that last September's military coup might ease the crisis, because junta leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin is a Muslim. Since the putsch, violence has worsened. On June 4, insurgents were blamed for a train derailment that caused the entire railway network in the south to grind to a halt. With no end in sight to the conflict, Thailand's government will have to work even harder to keep the violence from distracting the tourist trade...
...gets hooked by his ancient predecessor's storytelling skills. "As I immersed myself increasingly in Herodotus' book, I identified more and more, emotionally and cognitively, with the world and events that he recalls," writes Kapuscinski. "I felt more deeply about the destruction of Athens than about the latest military coup in the Sudan, and the sinking of the Persian fleet struck me as more tragic than yet another mutiny of troops in Congo." But Herodotus does more than report - he also imparts a lesson that modern-day rulers should heed. "Whoever first starts a war," warns Kapuscinski, "in Herodotus' opinion...
Thailand's Constitutional Tribunal on Wednesday announced the landmark dissolution of the country's former ruling party, further unsettling a nation that has suffered more than a year of political chaos that culminated in last September's military coup. Many Thais, however, believed he might attempt a political comeback. Last month, the former Prime Minister was awarded his first leadership position since the coup, being named head of Thailand's Professional Golf Association - hardly a position of great importance. But even that token presence in Thai society was read by some as evidence that Thaksin wanted to keep himself in the political mix. "It remains to be seen what Thaksin will do," said Sunai...
...just a game," Puchta says with a sigh, his voice fading out. A few months earlier, he had the distinction of being the first in the paparazzi pack to snap a young widow after her aging husband, a famous pop composer, had blown his brains out. That "coup" did not make him feel especially proud. "A trained monkey can do it," says the tabloid lensman. "This is not photography. It's waiting around in a car. It starts getting on my nerves..." Then, he quickly corrects himself: "Don't jot that down. You have to write I am a motivated...
