After graduation from College Judge Lowell spent three years in the Law School, and then entered the active practice of law. He served for three years in the state legislature, in which he held important positions on various committees. In 1898 he was appointed to the District Court bench, and in 1905 became justice of the United States Circuit Court. Judge Lowell was for several years a member of the Board of Overseers, previous to becoming a Fellow of the Corporation, a position which he was still holding.
