...everyone has such patience. San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom, whose office has officiated over marriage ceremonies for thousands of gays since the California Supreme Court decision, told TIME recently that he thinks the outcome of the marriage vote will impact far more than just who can marry and who can't. "We're going to have a chance to find out whether America, and California, is ready for the change embodied in Barack Obama's campaign," said Newsom. "Or does it simply stop with him?" The country will know soon enough...
Thailand's political crisis appeared to deepen on Tuesday when the country's Supreme Court sentenced former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to two years in prison for violating conflict of interest laws while in office. The Supreme Court delivered a victory to the anti-Thaksin protesters that have been camped out in Bangkok for months when it ruled 5 to 4 that the former Thai leader broke Thai law by approving the sale of state-owned Bangkok real estate to his wife for $22.7 million...
Thaksin, who was ousted from power by the military in a 2006 bloodless coup, got the news in London, where he fled in August with his family after his wife, Pojaman, was found guilty of tax evasion by Thailand's Criminal Court. Last week, a Thai court dismissed an assets concealment charge against the former Prime Minister, and earlier this year three of Thaksin's lawyers were jailed when they were caught attempting to bribe court officials overseeing his cases. All this is making it harder, says Panitan, for Thaksin's friends and allies in Thailand and overseas to defend him in his accusations against Thailand's courts. "Conflict of interest laws are a common feature...
Ever since the International Criminal Court began pursuing allegations of war crimes in Darfur in 2005, its investigators have pursued a government-backed militia leader known as "the colonel of colonels." Ali Muhammad Ali Abd Al Rahman - a.k.a. Ali Kushayb - was high in the pantheon of the Janjaweed militia when a warrant was finally issued for his arrest in February 2007. Investigators said he led raids that left hundreds dead and countless homes destroyed. According to one witness, Ali Kushayb once inspected a line of naked women just before they were raped by his men. There were critical grumblings that...
