Author of What Would Machiavelli Do? and a columnist for FORTUNE magazine, Bing has written a wry 21st century courtier's manual that irreverently harnesses the wisdom of the ancient Zen masters. The elephants in this clever business handbook are the outsize ceos and captains of industry who take up all the air and space in every room they enter. Bing offers advice on the care and feeding of such corporate pachyderms, but, more important, he tells you how not to get trampled. Drain yourself of all hope, he says. Don't expect anything--especially kindness. And never, ever, criticize...
...Jeanne (Hilary Swank) with a good motive for her crime: she is supposed to be a noblewoman who has lost her lands and family because they fell out of favor with the crown. It also places her in some amusingly bad company--a sexually voracious Cardinal (Jonathan Pryce), a courtier who is too clever by half (Simon Baker), a fake noble husband (Adrien Brody) and the mystic mountebank Cagliostro (Christopher Walken, who is, as always, deliciously weird). You may not be able to follow the overall arc of their scheming, but scene by scene they are a delightful crew, hissing...
Over six decades, Schlesinger has divided himself between the roles of historian (author, notably, of the three-volume The Age of Roosevelt, about F.D.R.) and activist-courtier. ...know the implications of what he's saying. Accordingly, little chemistry develops with Ophelia because Stiles spends much of her screen time pouting and skulking. The only discernable reason that the two are a match for one another is because they are equally petulant. Hamlet does not represent "the courtier's, soldier's, scholar's, eye," just a spoiled latch-key kid whose parents didn't hug him enough. Thankfully, the two are saved by the supporting cast. Bill Murray as Polonius injects significant pathos into Polonius' foppish politicking and Liev Schriber demonstrates some exceptionally tender moments before he departs...
