...MALE NOVELISTS WITH A YEN to be Danielle Steel: a motorcycle will haul almost any load of sentimental mush. Robert Olmstead knows this. In his novel AMERICA BY LAND (Random House; $20), Ray Redfield, 23 and drifting, heads out on his Harley to visit his cousin Juliet in New Mexico. He doesn't know she has just sold her newborn daughter to a pair of yuppies. She doesn't know he is bleeding internally from an industrial accident. On the big bike, wounded together, they blast through Colorado and Nevada at 80 m.p.h., charming waitresses and sassing state cops, bumming...

Researchers later learned that the level of gamma interferon present in the cerebrospinal fluid of MS patients skyrocketed just before and during acute attacks. Attention therefore shifted to a cousin molecule, beta interferon, which appears to play the role of inhibiting gamma. At the University of Chicago, Dr. Avertano Noronha and his colleagues demonstrated that beta interferon markedly decreased the activity of white blood cells obtained from multiple sclerosis patients. Beta interferon, they found, not only restrained the proliferation of these cells, it also shut down their production of myelin-destroying compounds...

These are not the people that Saddam Hussein counts on. He has drawn around himself a tight circle of supporters, loyal members of his al-Tikriti clan, whose interlocking relationships ensure his control of the security services, the military and the Baath party. The army is run by a cousin who launched poison-gas attacks against the Kurds in 1988 and destroyed Shi'ite holy sites in the south after the war. Internal security is entrusted to two half- brothers, and Saddam's younger son, Qusai, 26, was recently put in charge of the 10,000-man presidential guard. Another...

...cousin recently told me, "We already have a term limit mechanism in place. It's called an election." If voters are dissatisfied with their representatives, they should reject them at the polls. Term limit laws, in any form, deprive voters of even those leaders who have proved themselves worthy of re-election...

What prevents Barbarians from being truly outstanding is Garner's miscasting plus Gelbart's reluctance to pull the trigger on the conniving Johnson. Example: in one scene, the born-to-shop Dr. Cupcake tells Ross a heart- wrenching story about her leg waxer's cousin, who was dumped from his job of 18 years when KKR took over his company. Seeking to illustrate the human carnage of leveraged buyouts, she informs hubby that the man went home and shot himself. Johnson looks concerned. Here, the film is taking real liberties with the truth. This conversation did not take place anywhere...
