...search for self. That quest, and the thoughts it inspires, brings as much pain as enlightenment. In a typical passage, Heaney, who grew up in Northern Ireland, bitterly remembers the Catholic ghetto, and "how quick I was to know my place." In another, he faces the ghost of his cousin Colum, killed in the sectarian violence. "You confused evasion and artistic tact," the murdered man tells him. "The Protestant who shot me through the head/ I accuse directly, but indirectly, you . . . for the way you whitewashed ugliness and drew/ the lovely blinds of the Purgatorio/ and saccharined my death with...
Stranger than Paradise is certainly a remarkable film, technically and dramatically. The camera follows Willie (John Luric). Eddie (Richard Edson) and Willie's Hungarian cousin Eva (Eszter Balint) as they drive from New York to Cleveland to Miami Beach in search of fun and excitement. They don't find any, but they do find a grainy black and white America and some money. Not quit paradise...

Ver brought $1,600 to post as bail, then left before any photographers showed up. Ver, a cousin of President Ferdinand Marcos, was once considered the second most powerful man in the Philippines. Now his authority has been seriously weakened. With Ver's indictment, the Tanodbayan supported the findings of last fall's majority report of the Agrava board, which had been appointed by the government to investigate...

But though this year the label remains the same, the bottle in which this Parisian tale sings out, belies a performance a pale cousin of its once spectacular self. Gigis past was like sipping fine champagne into dreamy glee, but this Gigi seems somehow like a hangover: I know it should have been fun, but now it all seems too foggy; only this time I really don't think I want to remember...
...only is this subplot illogical and a waste of time, it tears down all the suspense the MacGuffin is supposed to create. Odell makes ludicrously pointless decisions like having Supergals' roomie the cousin of Lois Lane, or having Selena's exhenchman Nigel (Peter Cooke) a math teacher at Lee's school...
