...pity that your "Brief History of: Un-Retirement" focused on sports stars [July 28]. Otherwise, it might have mentioned the celebrated case of soprano Dame Nellie Melba. The phrase "More farewells than Nellie Melba" still has currency in her native Australia. After her official farewell at London's Covent Garden in 1926, she returned to Australia two years later to sing farewell in Sydney and, over the next few months, Melbourne, Geelong, and finally Adelaide. No matter whether the arena is sporting, theatrical or musical, no one can really be said to have "done a Melba" who hasn't resurrected...
...promote Amro Worldwide, a London-based gay tour operator, and to tout tourism to several gay-friendly U.S. destinations. In the week leading up to the British capital's gay pride parade on July 5, the agency placed 60 posters along escalators in London's Leicester Square and Covent Garden tube stations, which serve Soho, the city's gay hub. "It thrills me to know that these are the same melodies listened to by people 600 years ago," says 25-year-old marketing manager...
...Despite a closer resemblance to Joan Collins than Sutherland, Durkin's Metropolitan audition reminded one Canadian critic of "a young Joan Sutherland without the belle poitrine [fine bosom]," and six years later, her much-heralded talent faces the blowtorch of expectation with Alcina. NIDA-trained Way, resident director at Covent Garden, has no doubt Durkin's voice can take the heat. "There's a glint in her eyes," he notes. Moreover, she has the lightning-bolt stage skills to transfigure the role: "The voice, the imagination, the inner conviction, the dexterity and physical expressiveness, command of language...
