...flabbergasted that your cover??in the wake of the Democratic election triumph was a Venn diagram with the headline "Why the Center Is the New Place to Be" [Nov. 20]. Huh? The Democrats kicked butt. You should have put Howard Dean on the cover. It was his 50-state strategy, along with the great fund-raising work of Congressman Rahm Emanuel and Senator Chuck Schumer, and great candidates with grass-roots support, that won the election...

...so glad that your astronomy cover??story about the first stars [Sept. 4] dealt with what we astronomers really do rather than the mere semantic debate over whether Pluto is a planet or a dwarf planet. Michael Lemonick wonderfully conveyed the feeling of using a big telescope and showed how astronomers work together observing in different parts of the spectrum to gain a picture of that early stage of our universe...

Lincoln Schuster, due credit for his skill and initiative, you speak of Mr. Schuster as "as shrewd an opportunist as there is in the publishing world." In every fine sense this seems true; but if you meant by "opportunist" a man who seizes every chance to aggrandize himself, regardless of principles, I trust you will let me contradict...
