...Bogusky, this kind of "buzz," or "viral," marketing is advertising's future. Covert, hands-on and unabashedly weird, the genre--industry insiders call it "network-enhanced word of mouth"--has turned websites and other forums into interactive opportunities for advertisers and consumers to connect. Crispin Porter & Bogusky helped make Canada's Molson beer the fastest-growing top-25 import in the U.S. last year as it built up buzz in the bars by slapping on beer bottles labels with oddly suggestive comments like "Skinny-dippers are people too." "Conventional branding tends to piggyback on pop culture," says Bogusky, 41, whose...

...interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi insisted last week that Iraq would go ahead with elections scheduled for January, despite continuing violence. But U.S. officials tell TIME that the Bush team ran into trouble with another plan involving those elections--a secret "finding" written several months ago proposing a covert CIA operation to aid candidates favored by Washington. The Hmong campaign was not publicly acknowledged by the U.S. until 1994, when former CIA Director William Colby told Congress of the Hmong's "heroism and sacrifice." Shortly after the Pathet Lao regime took power in 1975-two years after the U.S. had left the country-tens...

...plausible solution? For good or ill, the broad outline of Kerry's position on Iraq does not differ from the President's. It does, however, differ in nuance--in its reliance on diplomacy rather than unilateralism and, for future military actions against al-Qaeda, in its reliance on covert intelligence and special operations rather than conventional military assaults. Kerry is not going to bug out of Iraq or abandon the broader war against Islamist radicalism. He even outflanked the President on the right by proposing a larger military. As the campaign progresses, we'll see whether the President outflanks Kerry...

...This week, TIME conducted a detailed interview with the lead FAM on board Flight 327, one of the thousands of covert, armed government agents who patrol the skies. The man, who authorities did not allow to be identified by name, is 35 years old and worked previously for another federal law enforcement agency. In that job, he often dealt with foreign citizens...
