Knowledge is power, and for a country, intelligence about the covert activities of enemies and sometimes of friendly states is power supreme. This makes spying rewarding--so much so that it is institutionalized without an iota of shame by every country in the world. Yet it is a terrible shock to discover an agent spying on his own country and feeding vital information to the enemy. ...Klerk denies ever knowing about security police that committed gross violations of human rights nor of the hit squads and the torture camp of Vlakplaas--a state-funded center for covert operations. And what of those unmarked four-wheel-drive vehicles pulling up at dawn with clockwork precision? Here is an inside look at how Pakistan runs its covert war in Kashmir...
...watched the New York Giants run around like Lilliputians in the hands of Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens, I was forced to hear my neighbor ravenously slurp salsa off his fingertips. For some, the day becomes a covert Budweiser-consumption competition. For others, any sign of physical weakness in the football players elicits a joyous chorus of "sissy" and "wimp." When the quarterback of the Ravens hustled off the field to get an x-ray of his left hand, a resident Hercules yelled, "Put on a bandage and suck it up. This is the damn Super Bowl...
