...that's precisely the point. Bayside Shakedown?and its sequel?are cop movies without the usual cop-movie trappings. Rather than focus on the derring-do of cowboy police collaring bad guys, these movies look inward, exploring?often hilariously?the petty annoyances, political infighting and endless frustrations of paperwork, bureaucracy and tight budgets that come with being a public servant. Though hardly by choice, Aoshima and his colleagues spend more time tracking down stolen receipts for their expense reports, angling for better-subsidized lunches and ferrying their bosses to golf tournaments than catching crooks. ...bottle of Singa Jengke, or "crouching lion," a barely refined vodka produced in the industrial heartland of Tangerang. The music booming in the shop is heavy, probably Nordic, and a bootlegged DVD is showing the latest video from the German band Lucyfire. Top directors?including Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of the hip Cowboy Bebop, and Koji Morimoto, who worked on the seminal Akira?signed on immediately. The President may try one too many cowboy tricks, or he may simply be seen as the guy who got us through a tough time. The country post--Sept. 11 may be entirely different from the country before the outrage occurred.
