...lines across the screen with the abandon of a drunken galoot aiming at a barn door. Though the film interrupts its chases and shootouts to let some fine actors stare meaningfully or spit out a little sagebrush wisdom, it rarely allows them to build the camaraderie that an old cowhand like Gabby Hayes exuded with no sweat. Agreeable but never compelling, Silverado proves it takes more than love of the western to make a good one. Maybe the dudes at K-Tell were a mite too slick for the job. --By Richard Corliss
Woody (voiced again by Tom Hanks) confronts toy mortality, the temptations of celebrity and, yes, the possibilities of sexual adventure (with Joan Cusack's Jessica the cowgirl). That's a lot for an earnest little cowhand to handle. But the gang from Andy's bedroom (led by Tim Allen's Buzz Lightyear, naturally) offers him daring, good-humored support during his multiple crises. Just getting Slinky the Dog, Rex the Dinosaur and Mr. Potato Head across a busy street is a task of Schwarzeneggerian proportions--but funny. Pixar's improved computer animation is up to all the demands of this...
Olmos' next role was as star of a PBS special, The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez, a true story about a Mexican cowhand who became the object of one of the biggest manhunts in Texas history, all because of an incorrectly translated word. He threw himself into the part with characteristic fervor, studying old newspaper clippings and photographs for clues to Cortez's inner state. The most audacious touch, perhaps, was the decision to have Cortez speak Spanish throughout the movie -- no subtitles. "I wanted to put non- Spanish speaking viewers in the same predicament as the law-abiding citizens...
...cameo turn by Chuck Jones, the cartoon auteur who developed Bugs Bunny. Is the plot conflict as pure as an archetypal Western shoot-out? Then one bad guy, the Cowboy (Robert Picardo), will twirl his hair dryer like a six-shooter while he sings I'm an Old Cowhand; and another, the thug-chauffeur Igoe (Vernon Wells), will shoot a man through the gloved finger of his steel hand and then, to impress a gawking boy, blow smoke from the glove's ruptured finger. Is the movie gaily influenced by old Howard Hawks, Roger Corman and even Jerry Lewis films...
...captive barely resembled the mountain man who had become something of a legend. His shaggy beard had been replaced by a trim mustache, and agents speculated that he had undergone facial surgery. Authorities found him by shadowing Danny Martinez, a cowhand pal. "We set up a net around Mr. Martinez, and Dallas walked into it," said an FBI agent. In Idaho, Dallas faces an additional five years for prison escape, tacked onto his 30-year sentence for manslaughter...
