Myrick and Sanchez had tried to cast their main characters for two years before finding Donahue, Leonard and Williams. They gave the actors a 35-page plot outline and a lesson or two in handling a camera. Josh got an old CP-16-mm film camera. "We showed him how to load it and how not to destroy it," says Myrick. "But he treated it like a boat anchor anyway." Heather was given a High-8 video camera. The directors bought the High-8 for $500 at Circuit City. After the shooting, they returned it and got a refund...
...patzer -- he's had the white pieces all along and now he's looking to checkmate NATO at the negotiating table. Time for Madeleine and the boys at State to start boning up on their Nimzo-Indian defense. Searching for Bobby Fischer (1993) is the best chess movie CP has ever seen (although the Russian wrestler from Kubrick's The Killing should have got a spin-off movie of his own). It's also about a player whose every contest is haunted by history. NATO knows about that -- it's searching for Munich and terrified of finding Vietnam instead...
...Please Remain in Your Homes, well, once again CP's conflicted. Go looks like a definite go. Never Been Kissed? Iffy, but CP developed a tiny crush on the new dewy Drew since The Wedding Singer, and David Arquette is a rock-solid talent (though he's still working up the courage to rent Home Fries). The only sure skip is yet another moldy Jackie Chan re-release, Double Dragons, about -- get this -- TWO Jackie Chans! Hilarious. Stay home and rent Double Impact -- it's twice the VanDammage, after all. Or better yet, read a book...
...work moved to the University of Chicago when the Manhattan Project consolidated its operations there, culminating in the assembly of the first full-scale pile, CP-1, on a doubles squash court under the stands of the university football field in late 1942. Built up in layers inside wooden framing, it took the shape of a doorknob the size of a two-car garage--a flattened graphite ellipsoid 25 ft. wide and 20 ft. high, weighing nearly 100 tons. Dec. 2 dawned to below-zero cold. That morning the State Department announced that 2 million Jews had perished in Europe...
...This week's Please Remain in Your Homes feature? CP thinks he's found one to skip. Fans of The Truman Show (like CP) might get an unambitious chuckle out of EdTV. But in the real remake category, one look at the papers ("A film of unusual ineptitude," raved the New York Times) and CP's ready to bet the farm that The Mod Squad, stripped of its afros, funky title sequence, and the heroin chic of Peggy Lipton, has flushed it's soul down the '90s post-mod crapper. Find the old pilot. Watch. Repeat. And as always, rewind...
