...ends of the field chosen for the contest. Having drawn one of the middle lands, Minnesota's Ted Balko, 1934 champion, was handicapped by rows so spotty that once he found only three ears in 15 feet, of which one was so small that it flew through a crack in his bang-board. Adam Byczynski, Illinois champion and a hot favorite, husked fast but carelessly. His creditable total of 1,630 lb. was cut down to 1,466 by penalties. Well short of the Byczynski gross but a shade ahead of his net was the score of a long...

The Premier has, however, about 250,000 Chinese soldiers who are actually crack troops, "Chiang's Own," trained to the snap of intelligent duty by German officers. In case of war with Japan these 250,000 expect to have the harrowing duty of driving as many as possible of the 2,000,000 miscellaneous "Chinese soldiers" ahead of them against the Japanese...

Less philosophical and consequently more confused are the Japanese policemen. Tokio possesses the largest red light district in the world, covering a square mile, but instead or protecting the wild life in this valuable preserve, the constabulary has begun to crack down and has closed the taxi dance halls, so called. That this is but the first move in a drive to clean up Tokio for the Olympic Games visitors in 1940 is proof positive that however much they may themselves believe it, the Japs do not as yet thoroughly understand Western civilization. Mayor Cermak or any other executive...
