...Poison Oracle, centering on linguistic research among apes at a desert sultanate's laboratory. Perfect Gallows (Pantheon; 234 pages; $16.95) traces the psychic development of a world-class actor who through much of the narrative has barely set foot on a stage, yet feels absolutely certain of his craft and ultimate triumph...
...steamed across the Atlantic last week, the majestic white passenger liner evoked memories of such grand old ships as the Queen Mary and the Normandie. Yet this $200 million craft, built at a French shipyard during the past 21 months, is very much a space-age creation. Cantilevered from her single smokestack, 14 stories above the waterline, is a flying cocktail lounge. Inside the ship, an atrium five decks high forms a main lobby, complete with glass elevators and towering fountains. INFRARED SENSORS. Several satellites, including an advanced craft called Teal Ruby that is being prepared for launch, have detectors that are sensitive to the infrared frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum. America's Glorious Quilts, edited by Dennis Duke and Deborah Harding (Macmillan; 320 pages; $75), assembles photographs of some of the finest examples of this varied craft. Country and patriotic themes dominate the 19th century pieces, although their combinations of colors and designs are hardly naive. The surprises in the book are the contemporary works -- vibrant abstractions such as Yvonne Porcella's Ginza (1984) and Michael James' Rhythm Color: Bacchanale (1986) -- that indicate the evolution of this...
