...most skilled practitioners in the ambiguous craft of whittling the Irish character into attractive shape is Walter Macken, and his product is as exportable as the golden Irish whisky that sells for a duty-free $1.50 a fifth at Shannon Airport. Macken's wild geese fly west, sometimes to nest in their natural habitat in the U.S. book club (his novel, Rain on the Wind, was a Literary Guild selection). He specializes in the most Irish part of Ireland, i.e., Galway in the west, least touched by the modern (or non-Irish) world...

Interior Decorators. The Southmoor Bank, Reporter Thiem disclosed, held a $24,000, low-interest (35%) mortgage on Hodge's $25,000 lakefront Springfield home. The News also reported that some $450,000 in checks from Hodge's office had been paid in two years to Fabric-Craft Sales Corp., a one-room Chicago interior decorating service headed by Mystery Man William Lydon, a policeman who was once indicted (and later acquitted) in the murder of a Chicago madam. Fabric-Craft and two other companies headed by Lydon listed two Hodge aides as officers: Chief Personnel Officer Lloyd Lane...

World War II produced no more unlovely objects than the lumbering, boxlike boats known as landing craft, tank (LCT). Their mission was dangerous but not dashing, and their ill-assorted officers were drawn together in a curiously defiant camaraderie of the mocked...

Delicate Balance. Hickling writes of the sea and his ungainly craft with the accuracy of a seaman, the eye of a poet, and a prose that suggests he profitably studied Conrad. His descriptions transform the experiences of the sea from something noted into something experienced; though they sometimes teeter on the brink of preciosity ("A filibuster of surf"), they rarely lose their delicate balance. Sample: "About the ship the sea resounded with fantastic whispers, occasionally erupting against the shivering bows; it moved like a beast asleep...

...whole cast enters with gusto into the spirit of the piece and seems to have a whale of a good time gamboling through the romp and missing none of its facetious facets. Jerome Kilty is superb in the title role of the earthy master of "the gentle craft" who eventually becomes Lord Mayor of London. It is one of those rich character parts that Kilty has made his specialty. The role further contains what is perhaps the largest repertory of oaths and insults ever assembled (mostly hurled at the cobbler's poor wife); Kilty manages to make them sound like...
