...after years on cable and syndication) was something of a milestone in TV's awards-show mania. Little more than a decade ago, the big four--the Oscars, Tonys, Emmys and Grammys--pretty much had the field to themselves. Now it seems as though every Hollywood interest group, craft union and country-music association has its own awards--and a TV special to trumpet them. Perhaps the grandiosity of this "social vision" indicates that we should give more respect to those who attempted to craft one in the past. I find examples in people like John Dewey, with his great veneration of democracy; or Herbert Marcuse, who spotted the debilitating effects of untrammeled capitalism all around him; and presently Jurgen Habermas, who sees in unlimited corporate expansion a new colonization of our minds and lifestyles potentially as insidious and oppressive as colonial regimes of old. ...bold, imaginative and offers perhaps the best peace one could hope for in Bosnia's far from perfect world. That seems somehow fitting, if only in the sense that the deal's virtues and its flaws suggest the character of the man who did so much to craft...
